Thanathorn said “Thailand has had the most coups in the world”…is that true?
Throughout the 4 years under military rule, the online world has often quoted Thailand being the country with the most amounts of coups in the world. This particular statistic has been consistently cited from both domestic and international news agencies, morphing into a key matter of political discourse. Thanathorn Jeungrungruangkit, a new face in Thai politics, has also reiterated this statement, but is it actually true?
For the sake of clarity, this is by no means true and Thailand does not have the most amount of coups in the world as claimed by various sources.
On the 27th of September 2018, the leader of the Future Forward party Mr. Thanathorn Jeungrungruangkit posted a speech he gave in New York City on his Facebook page.
“I explained to them that Thailand has had the most amount of coups in the world, as an attempt by the elites to instigate division amongst the people” Mr. Thanathorn wrote on the page.
However, a research from a non-profit organization called The Center for Systematic Peace (CSP) which examines the number of coups around the world between 1946-2010, which includes planned, successful, and non-successful coups, showed that Sudan had 31 coups within the 64-year timespan.
Therefore it is Sudan who has the highest number of coups in the world, and Thailand is ranked fourth with 17 successful/unsuccessful coups. However, it is true that Thailand has conducted the most coups in Southeast Asia but certainly not in the world.
